A delightful twist on classic French toast with a caramelized sugar crust that adds an enchanting burnt cream note.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf of brioche or challah bread (1214 slices)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk (or almond/oat milk for dairy-free)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (or half-and-half)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (or brown sugar)
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract (or vanilla bean paste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (or nutmeg)
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Slice the bread into thick slices and arrange in a greased baking dish.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt until smooth.
  3. Pour the custard mixture over the bread and press down to absorb. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or overnight.
  4. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Bake for 25-30 minutes until set and golden brown. Broil for an additional 2-3 minutes for extra crispiness.
  6. Sprinkle sugar on top and caramelize with a torch or broiler.
  7. Serve with fresh berries, powdered sugar, and maple syrup.

Notes

Use day-old bread for better custard absorption. Soaking overnight improves flavor.
