A beloved southern classic featuring crispy chicken fried steak topped with creamy white gravy, perfect for a comforting meal any time.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 pieces of cube steak
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (for gravy)
  • 2 cups milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a shallow dish, mix together the flour, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  2. In another bowl, beat the eggs and whisk in the buttermilk until combined.
  3. Take each piece of cube steak and dip it into the egg mixture, allowing excess to drip off. Then coat the steak in the seasoned flour; be sure to cover it evenly.
  4. In a large skillet, heat a generous amount of vegetable oil over medium-high heat.
  5. Carefully place the coated steaks in the hot oil. Fry each side for about 3-4 minutes, or until they are golden brown and cooked through. Once done, remove the steaks and let them drain on paper towels.
  6. To prepare the gravy, melt the butter in the same skillet. Whisk in the 2 tablespoons of flour to form a roux, cooking for 1-2 minutes until golden.
  7. Gradually pour in the milk while whisking continuously to prevent lumps from forming. Cook until the gravy is thickened to your liking.
  8. Season the gravy with salt and pepper to taste.
  9. Serve your crispy chicken fried steak topped with the warm, creamy gravy.

Notes

For healthier option, consider using olive oil instead of vegetable oil for frying. Substitute cube steak with round steak if preferred.
