A wholesome twist on a classic Italian dish, this Healthy Oven Baked Chicken Parmesan features crispy chicken breasts topped with marinara sauce and melted mozzarella.

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 cup whole wheat breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 2 cups marinara sauce (homemade or store-bought)
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Olive oil spray
  • Fresh basil for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Pat the chicken breasts dry and season them with salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Combine in a large bowl the whole wheat breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning.
  4. Dip each chicken breast into the breadcrumb mixture, ensuring they are well-coated on all sides.
  5. Spray a baking sheet lightly with olive oil and arrange the coated chicken breasts on it.
  6. Bake the chicken in the oven for about 20-25 minutes, or until they are golden and cooked through.
  7. Remove the chicken from the oven. Generously spoon marinara sauce over each piece, then sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese on top.
  8. Return the tray to the oven and bake for an additional 5-10 minutes, until the cheese has melted and is bubbly.
  9. Let the chicken rest for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

For a healthier version, use homemade marinara rich in herbs and fresh tomatoes. Can also add sautéed spinach or roasted red peppers before adding sauce and cheese.
