Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, these homemade hash browns are the perfect side for any meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large russet potatoes
  • 1 small onion (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Start by peeling and grating the potatoes using a box grater or food processor until you have fine shreds.
  2. Rinse the grated potatoes in cold water to remove excess starch, then drain thoroughly.
  3. If using, finely chop the onion and mix it with the grated potatoes.
  4. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until hot.
  5. Add the grated potato mixture to the skillet, pressing it down with a spatula to form a flat layer.
  6. Cook for about 5-7 minutes until the bottom is golden brown and crispy.
  7. Carefully flip the hash browns over in sections and cook the other side for 5-7 minutes until crispy.
  8. Season with salt and pepper to taste, and serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

For a creamier texture, substitute russet potatoes with Yukon Golds. Olive oil can be used for a richer flavor.
